GCU holds cancer awareness seminar

Ignorance is fatal while awareness is power; about 75 percent of breast cancer victims in Pakistan come to hospital at the last stage while this ratio is only 10 percent in the western countries, said oncologists while addressing an awareness seminar on breast cancer at the Government College University, Lahore. About 600 students attended the seminar held under the auspices of the university’s Quality Enhancement Cell and Surgical Oncology Society Pakistan.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman also met with the oncologists and laid a stress on initiating indigenous research projects on advanced biology, lasers, MRIs and cancer medicines. He said that GCU would continue to arrange awareness campaigns for the health of its students, as a healthy body was essential for a healthy mind.

Addressing the seminar, eminent clinical oncologist Prof. Muhammad Arshad Chmmea said that there was frightening increase in the ratio of breast cancer in Pakistan, and now every 8th woman in the country was at the risk of suffering from this fatal disease. However, he said that awareness about this cancer was near to nil. He called upon the students to spread the awareness about this fatal disease in their families and neighbors with a core message that “early detection is the best prevention against cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign @ King Edward Medical University 2013

  • More than 100,000 Pakistani women develop breast cancer every year
  • More than half of them (50000) die from this cancer every year which is lot more than dengue and measles combined
  • Chances of survival are directly related to the stage at which the diagnosis is made. With early diagnosis more than 90 % women will survive and majority will not require breast removal for cure
  • With late stage 3 or 4 presentation, less than 25 % will survive and almost all of them will require breast removal for cure if at all achieved
  • In developed world less than 10 % present at advanced stage whereas in Pakistan 75 % present at locally advanced or metastatic stage
  • There is great need for women to be aware of breast cancer and to learn to self examine and see a doctor immediately if they detect a lump in their breasts
  • Dept of Surgery@KEMU under leadership of Cancer Surgeon Prof M Arshad Cheema FRCS is organizing a walk at 9 am starting from Patiala block King Edward Medical University followed by a seminar at 10 am at University Auditorium to produce awareness about this disease.
