2nd National Cancer Surgery Conference

Three-day National Cancer Surgery Conference concluded at Lahore on 13th March, 2010. This conference was arranged by the Surgical Oncology Society Pakistan (SOS-PK).

On 11th March, Live Cancer Surgery Workshop was conducted at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. More than 300 eminent surgeons from various parts of this country attended this workshop.

On 12th march, the second day of cancer surgery conference, live advanced cancer operations were performed at Mayo Hospital Lahore. Eminent surgeons of the country Professor Mumtaz Mehr performed surgery on large intestine cancer by laparoscopic operations. Head of the department of Surgery King Edward Medical University Professor Muhammad Arshad Cheema operated on an Advanced Breast Cancer patient. These operations were broadcast live to 400 teachers of medical colleges, district surgeons, trainee doctors and medical students. All participants of these workshops learned about the optimum treatment of cancer patients.

On the 13th March, 2010, 3rd day of the conference more than 500 hundred surgeons from all over the Pakistan attended this conference and learned new techniques to fight against this deadly disease which is becoming very common in Pakistan. About 60 state of art lectures and presentations were delivered in this conference.

The main highlight of this conference was the “The Great Debate” to fight against the cancer. Mr. Fawad H. Fawad Health secretary to the Government of the Punjab assured all help to the surgeons to fight against the cancer. Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University Professor Zafarullah Khan, Principal Rawalpindi Medical College Professor Musaddiq Khan, Principal Fatima Memorial Medical College Professor Humayun Maqsood, Miss Shahima Rehman, chairperson of Fatima Memorial hospital, Director INMOL Dr. Waqar Haider, Mr. Naeem Director Center of nuclear medicine, Former Principal KEMU, Professor Ejaz Ahsan participated in this great debate. This debate was moderated by Professor Arshad Cheema President SOS-PK. At the end of debate following recommendations were adopted by the conference participants:
  1. We need to record the incidence and outcome of cancer by having a uniform One Page Cancer Registry 
  2. Cancer Prevention by public health education and Tobacco Control especially for youth and environment Pollution Control 
  3. Provision of optimum cancer care by making Integrated Cancer Centers in all teaching hospital with facilities under one roof 
  4. Adequate Pain Control for palliative care by provision of cheap and effective morphine 
  5. Roles of different stake holders like Surgeons, Medical & radiation oncologist, Primary care Physicians and Role of Government and Media was elaborated. 
Two state of art lectures”Professor Rashid Qureshi Memorial lecture and Professor Abbas Askari Memorial lecture” were delivered by Professor Mumtaz Mehr of Karachi and Professor Zafar Haider of Lahore.

At the end, Professors Muhammad Arshad Cheema President SOS-PK, Professor Sadaqat Ali Khan, Dr. Amir Ali Syed, Professor Abul Fazal and General Secretary Professor Zafar Ali Chowdry thanked all the participants, district and Tehsil surgeons of Punjab and surgeons from Peshawar, Karachi, Quetta, Islamabad and other parts of the country on their enthusiastic participation
